I remember that for the past three Sugarfree albums, I was unashamedly giddy and volatle as I tore open the packaging and popped in the discs in my player and got completely lost in the melodies and bittersweet lyricism of guitarist/vocalist/chief songwriter Ebe Dancel, while the simple yet effective musical strains of rhythm section Jal Taguibao (on bass) and drummer Kaka Quisumbing were equally hypnotic and uncannily just what the songs called for. The lyrics always seemed to hit close to home, and there was a painstaking honesty to the songwriting everyone could relate to, and everyone could easily hum and even play along with. Instantly, I knew that Sugarfree was a band that could go places, if only they managed to deal their cards right and avoid falling into the trappings of a sellout avenue. – Check out Pulp's November issue to read more.
